UMSI Course Waivers

Upcoming Waiver Deadlines

Skill-Based Waivers Session: Mon Aug 5th - Sun Aug 11th

The SI Course Waiver Policy is designed to allow MSI and MHI students to demonstrate proficiency and knowledge in the subject matter of a particular graduate-level course in lieu of formally completing the course.

A course waiver fulfills the requirement where the waived course is listed as a prerequisite for a more advanced SI course or required part of the degree program.

Course waivers do not count for credit, nor reduce the number of credits required to complete a degree. Instead, receiving a course waiver allows the student to choose a more advanced course or another course of interest to fulfill the credit requirement.

Though most graduate-level SI courses are eligible to be waived in some way, there is no benefit to requesting a waiver if the course is not either required for your degree or as a prerequisite to a more advanced course you would like to take.

Participation in the waiver process is voluntary. It is not necessary to attempt or earn any course waiver to complete your degree at UMSI!

There are three methods through which waivers may be requested or applied:

  1. Skill-Based Assessment: Students demonstrate their level of competency by taking a formal, graded assessment.

  2. Individual Review: Students demonstrate they have met all learning objectives of the SI course through previously completed coursework by submitting supporting documentation.

  3. Automatic: Students have successfully completed a pre-approved undergraduate course equivalent prior to beginning their graduate career at UMSI.
